A downloadable game for Windows

Embark on a heartwarming journey in "A Kind Of Community," where kindness is your mission! Join Taylor, guided by their therapist Thomas, in a quest to uplift a small, close-knit community. In this unique game, your goal is to spread kindness inspired by Taylor's therapy sessions.

Gameplay

"A Kind Of Community" combines engaging dialogue, choice-driven narratives, and thrilling platformer challenges. As you navigate through the 4-way top-down view of the community, you'll interact with various members, each harboring their own struggles and stories. Choose your dialogue wisely, as the right words can unlock a whole new world – the EmotionRealm.

In the EmotionRealm, experience beautifully crafted pixel art platforming levels, each representing the inner world of the community members. Your task? To traverse these levels, overcome obstacles, and reach the end goal. Success means not only helping an individual but also spreading contagious joy and kindness throughout the community.

~A Known Bug~

Unfortunately, the autosave feature is buggy. So any time you close out of and reopen the game, it will skip a chapter of interactions and a level. Fortunately the game can be completed in approximately 40 minutes, so a one-sitting playthrough is very feasible! If you want to reset the game after leaving prior to the end, or if you want to replay it, just delete the save file JSON and you're good to go!

Unique Features:

  • Engaging story driven by player choices in dialogues.
  • A seamless blend of narrative interaction and platforming.
  • Dive into the EmotionRealm  through platformer levels.
  • Humorous and heartwarming writing style.
  • Beautiful pixel art visuals.
  • An overarching theme of spreading both kindness and community.

Join Taylor on this inspiring adventure to transform a community through empathy, understanding, and action. In "A Kind Of Community," your words and choices have the power to spread joy and change lives. Are you ready to make a difference?

Video Review!

Awesome!! Thanks so much for the stream and the comment!

The feedback is definitely super valuable (And I, with one of my roles being musician, laughed so hard every time y'all went DUN DUN DUN DUN)! It was great to see the stuff that resonated and see what parts were more confusing, less precise, not the player experience we were going for (good and not so good), where bugs occurred, etc.

Yeah, there seems to be a bug where if the game is opened and left prior to the playthrough, it skips the opening dialogue convo and makes the end occur after 3 levels instead of 4 (so Cyrus, that bug notwithstanding, does have a playable level and more dialogue interaction). Our programmer doesn't have any time to put into the game post-jam, but that's definitely something I wanna get someone else to fix for future downloads (and maybe remove the automatic save JSON altogether since it can be played all the way through in 30 minutes anyway)

And you guys gave great suggestions too! Like a level becoming harder if you pick less favorable dialogue options is such a good idea! This is a concept I'd like to maybe expand someday, so I'll have to keep that in mind for possible implementation!

Thanks so much to y'all

Also would love to hear from your friends after they saw the stream/regular video if they had the same feelings about the leaf tiling of the one level!

Cant wait for future editions! Keep us posted!

I invaded so many peoples privacy / minds. Unsure how my friends would like me Mind Crushing them, however everything was done exceptionally well. I felt involved, the platforming and wall jumping was awesome. The tiling on the platforming can be hurtful to the eyes. Other than that, would love a full depth version of this, very chill and me and the boys had a lot of fun! Garmr says hes blind and he can no longer see. Beautiful game with beautiful execution.

The music absolutely SLAPS, had the game open and just bopped along while working on my own stuff for a few hours. The art is very colorful and vibrant, I loved all of the sprites, the level designs looked good but in TOTAL HONESTY I am not SUPER great at platformers, I couldn't finish most of the levels, but that's more on me than the level design itself, I'm a very simple gamer.

The message itself was lovely as well, it was nice to see that the obvious "people-pleaser" options weren't actually the best ones to take in the long run, and I thought the characters were very endearing outside of when they were clearly not meant to be, it was nice to see more than one side of everyone even in such a short amount of time.

Jason is my favorite LOL NOT JUST BECAUSE HIS LEVEL WAS THE EASIEST! Loved the crux of his problem just being "no i just miss my partner lol"

Very entertaining lil game! Excited to see what else you guys work on
